We formed Wharf St. Practice around a shared vision of providing flexible, client-centred ways of working with a range of common mental health issues such as low mood, anxiety, depression, work stress, relationship issues, grief, loss and trauma.

We are all qualified, insured, and registered with the BACP. We receive professional supervision and are committed to continuing our professional development.

How we work

Wharf St. Practice is a collective of independent therapists based in Shipley, West Yorkshire.

Whilst we each have our own pricing and approaches to counselling, we came together around the shared value of client choice. At Wharf St. Practice, you have control over your choice of therapist, the frequency and the direction of your therapy.

You can find answers to frequently asked questions about counselling and psychotherapy below.

If you have any more questions, please get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

What is counselling like at Wharf St. Practice?

Whilst each of us have different styles and influences, the universal element of counselling at Wharf St. Practice is a relationship. The relationship that you build over time with your therapist will be one of equals - full of empathy and non-judgement that will help you explore whatever you need to at a pace that is right for you. You will feel held, safe and accompanied side-by-side all the way through your process.

What is the difference between counselling, therapy and psychotherapy?

In the UK, the terms counselling, therapy and psychotherapy are used interchangeably - as are counsellor, therapist and psychotherapist.

How many sessions will I need?

There’s no way of knowing how many sessions will be right for you. Your therapist will speak to you about this early on and will build in regular opportunities for you both to review any goals and progress. If you’re working to a set budget, speak to your therapist about this and they will help you create time-appropriate goals for your sessions.

Is your venue accessible?

Unfortunately, Wharf St. Practice is not wheelchair accessible. All of the team are available for online and telephone counselling if face-to-face work at the site is not possible.

Is everything confidential?

In almost all cases, yes - your sessions will remain completely confidential between you and your therapist. There are a few exceptions to this which your therapist will speak to you about in your first session. These exceptions revolve around situations where we are legally bound to break confidentiality or have concerns over your/someone’s safety. Where possible, your therapist will always consult with you before breaching confidentiality. If you have any questions about confidentiality - speak to your therapist.

How do I know which of the team is the right therapist for me?

We encourage you to review each of our profiles to get a rough idea of how we work as individuals. Whilst we all have the same core qualification (we met whilst studying), our professional development and counselling styles mean we all work differently. Ultimately, the only way to know for sure which of us is the right therapist for you is to meet us and get a feel for the relationship. You can arrange consultations with any or all of us through our contact form.
